Art 10 Course Outline
Teacher: Mr. Petersen Course Outline: Art 10 is the foundation year for the senior high level of art studies. Art 10 has a general approach and scope, but more structured than Grade 9 Art in its presentation to ensure a strong basis for advancement to the senior art courses for those students who decide to continue. In the evaluation of students, course content offered and expectations desired, Art 10 reflects the wide diversity of student interest and ability levels. Art 10, like 20 and 30, focuses on the creative and artistic process both in practice and appreciation. Emphasis is placed upon exploration of some new media as well as building basic skills in design and drawing. No previous training is required, just the desire to do your best and try. This course can be accessed virtually on Weebly at http://petersenartroom.weebly.com We focus on three main components: · Drawings or delineations -all the ways we record visual information · Compositions or structures- all the ways images are put together to create meaning · Encounters with art- where we meet and how we respond to visual imagery Late Assignments, Missed Assignments and NHI My policy is: All projects are due on the critique date . Artwork must be completed and participation is key to a successful critique. We will be exploring self, peer and class forms of critique with our finished art pieces. Guidelines for a Creative Environment
Rules are in place to make the art room a SAFE and fun environment to create. Following these
guidelines will make it easier and more enjoyable for all of us to enjoy the course.
#1- Respect the materials and studio space . No throwing or deliberately destroying the
classroom materials. All art materials are available to you during class, flex blocks and every
lunch hour. Do not take classroom materials home, as they often are not returned once they
leave the art room. If there is a special item you would like to take home, an arrangement could
be made.
We clean up the art room ALWAYS at the end of class. The art materials will go a long way if
we all put them away.
#2 Ready at Bell- You should be ready with your art, in your seat with your sketchbook by the
time the bell rings. If coming to class on time becomes a difficult task for you, extra time in the
art room cleaning at lunch will be allotted.
#3- Being Present in class and when absent- Being present means actively participating in
class critiques and discussions, offering feedback to your peers, and utilizing class time to work
or research projects. It does not mean sitting on your smartphone creating Snapchats, using facebook
on your computer, skyping, texting or creating a playlist. See #4- Responsible Use of Technology.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and catch up. With
Weebly it is very accessible to go online and see where the class is at every day. Unexcused
absences will be dealt with immediately.
#4 Responsible use of Technology - There are many great ways that technological devices
and advances that have made the classroom a better place. However, no smart phones will be
allowed in class unless specifically mentioned. You may use your laptop for image reference, however it
is best you leave your phone in your locker or in teacher’s phone 'hotel' on the door. We only see each
other every other school day so let’s make our time together safe, creative and productive.
